Donkey Kong (US set 1)
Nintendo of America • 1981

Donkey Kong launched Nintendo's significant push into the North American arcade market in 1981. As a carpenter named Mario (originally known as Jumpman), players must navigate precarious construction platforms while dodging barrels and fireballs thrown by the titular Donkey Kong, who has kidnapped Pauline. The gameplay revolves around precise jumps to ascend levels and rescue the damsel, with stage layouts evolving over time from a simple sequence to more complex patterns designed to challenge player skill. This arcade classic requires a specialized "Nintendo Compatible" monitor for proper display; standard monitors will render the image as a negative. Rare factory-converted versions exist featuring red Radar Scope cabinets and slightly altered gameplay.
