Kaneko’s DJ Boy arrived in arcades in 1989 as an export release from Japan. This two-player fighting game presents a unique visual style, utilizing a 2.5D perspective that allows for dynamic movement and attacks across the screen. Players control characters who battle one another using music-themed moves; each character's actions are accompanied by vocal samples delivered by the legendary American DJ, Wolfman Jack. The gameplay revolves around close-quarters combat with punches, kicks, and special abilities tied to musical cues. Successfully executing these maneuvers allows players to gain an advantage over their opponent. DJ Boy was distributed in the United States under license from Kaneko via American Sammy Corporation. Notably, the original Japanese version of this game featured a different voice actor—Japanese musician Demon Kogure—for the disc jockey character. This export release brought Wolfman Jack’s recognizable voice to audiences outside of Japan for the first time.
