Gameplay

Dig Dug II shifts the perspective from its predecessor to an overhead view, tasking players with navigating a series of island environments as the subterranean hero Dig Dug. Using his signature pump to inflate and burst enemies – the Pookas and Fygers – remains central to gameplay, but this installment introduces a new tool: a jackhammer. Players can now use the jackhammer on ground pegs to create fault lines that, when connected across an island, will cause sections of land to sink into the ocean, eliminating anything standing upon them, including Dig Dug himself. While enemies avoid solid ground by crossing these cracks, they can transform into ghosts allowing them to traverse the landscape freely; strategic crack placement becomes vital for both offense and defense. Completing objectives like cutting off portions of an island earns bonus points in the form of vegetables, while enemies will occasionally attempt to escape by jumping into the water. Success requires a balance of enemy elimination, careful manipulation of the environment, and an awareness of the ever-present threat of ghostly pursuers – all within a series of increasingly challenging island layouts.
