Devil Zone
Universal • 1980

Devil Zone is a two-player vertical shooter released by Universal in 1980. Players control spacecraft and defend against waves of enemies descending from the top of the screen. Drawing inspiration from earlier titles like Radar Scope and Galaxian, the game features a distinctive grid pattern background, characteristic of many arcade games from the early 1980s. Gameplay involves maneuvering your ship using a two-way joystick to target and destroy incoming adversaries. With a limited palette of sixteen colors displayed on a 192x256 pixel screen, Devil Zone provides a clear view of the action as you work cooperatively with a second player to survive increasingly challenging enemy patterns. The game is part of Universal’s “Cosmic Series” of arcade titles. A relatively rare release, Devil Zone utilizes a Zilog Z80 processor for its gameplay and simple DAC sound chip for audio. Its initial public appearance was at the Amusement Operators Expo in March 1981.
