Depthcharge
Gremlin • 1977
Also known as: Sub Hunter

In Depthcharge, released in 1977 by Gremlin, you command a destroyer on the surface of the water while submerged submarines patrol below. Your mission is to sink these underwater vessels by strategically dropping depth charges. The submarines aren't defenseless; they retaliate by launching mines upwards towards your ship, adding an element of risk and requiring careful maneuvering. Gameplay involves anticipating submarine movements and leading your shots to maximize damage. Six depth charges can be deployed at a time, demanding tactical management as you balance offense with the need for reserves against incoming mines. Scoring is based on the value displayed on each submarine’s hull, with deeper submarines awarding higher points, and overtime is granted for reaching point milestones. A simple premise belies a surprisingly engaging challenge in Depthcharge. Mastering its mechanics—like managing depth charge deployment and avoiding mine blasts—is key to achieving a high score and outmaneuvering the persistent submarine threat.
