Double Dragon is a side-scrolling action game released in 1987 by Technos Japan, distributed under license to Taito for international release. Players control either Billy or Jimmy Lee as they fight their way through city streets and sewers to rescue Billy's girlfriend, Marian, from the clutches of the Black Shadow cult. The gameplay involves a mix of punches, kicks, and weapon pickups like pipes and boomerangs, all while battling waves of enemies in a 2.5D perspective that allows for limited depth perception. As a two-player cooperative game, Double Dragon allows friends to team up against the challenges together. Players navigate through several distinct stages, each populated with unique adversaries and obstacles requiring skillful timing and coordination. The game was initially released as an arcade title intended for audiences outside of Japan, later appearing on numerous home consoles and computers. Versions of this game have since been ported to a wide array of platforms including Nintendo, Sega, Commodore, Sinclair, Atari, and MSX systems, with some versions featuring updated graphics or remakes.
