Dragon Breed (World, M81 hardware)
Irem • 1989

Dragon Breed puts you in control of Kayus, a brave knight riding atop Bahamoot, a magnificent and articulated dragon. This side-scrolling shooter challenges players to navigate treacherous environments while battling waves of enemies. Bahamoot isn’t just for show; the dragon acts as both a shield against projectiles and a versatile weapon, capable of being used to lash out at foes or even encircle them. Kayus himself wields a crossbow but remains vulnerable, adding an element of strategic risk to every encounter. A unique mechanic allows players to collect colorful orbs that transform Bahamoot, granting new attacks like fiery breath, crescent-shaped energy blasts, homing miniature dragons, and electric bolts. Holding down the fire button charges increasingly powerful projectiles, culminating in a dragon-headed fireball. Platforming sections also appear throughout the game, encouraging dismounting and brief exploration alongside your draconic companion. Originally released as an arcade conversion kit in 1989, Dragon Breed features vibrant graphics and fast-paced action reminiscent of Irem's earlier classic, R-Type. A two-player setup allows for cooperative gameplay, utilizing a standard eight-way joystick and dual buttons to control Kayus’ movements and attacks.
