Dangerous Seed (Japan)
Namco • 1989

In Dangerous Seed, released by Namco in 1989, players pilot three distinct spacecraft through an alien-infested galaxy on a mission to destroy the central source of the invasion – the Danger-Seed itself. Beginning with separate fighter ships, each possessing unique firing patterns, players navigate four initial stages before progressing. Should a ship be destroyed, a more powerful replacement enters the fray, reinforcing the player’s chances against increasingly challenging enemy formations. Reaching the fifth stage unlocks a significant power boost: the three fighters merge to form the formidable “Moon Diver,” unleashing a devastating barrage of firepower. The game's vertical-scrolling shooter gameplay demands precision and strategic ship management as players battle their way through the Milky Way. Cooperative play is also supported, allowing two players to jointly confront the alien threat. Dangerous Seed utilizes Namco System 1 hardware, showcasing detailed visuals within a 224x288 resolution display, accompanied by an advanced sound system that includes Yamaha YM2151 audio capabilities and stereo DAC output. A soundtrack album was released shortly after the game's debut, further documenting its initial reception.
