Daioh is a two-player vertical scrolling shooter released by Athena in 1993. As pilots of advanced spacecraft, players navigate through increasingly challenging levels, battling waves of enemies and massive bosses rendered with detailed graphics and large sprites. The game’s difficulty steadily intensifies as you progress, demanding precision and skillful use of your arsenal. Players control their ships using an eight-way joystick and have access to a variety of weapons including ion shots, lasers, missiles, fire bombs, and more powerful special attacks like the mega beam and atomic bomb. Daioh’s technical specifications include a Motorola 68000 processor and X1-010 sound chip, contributing to its visual presentation and audio experience. The title itself translates from Japanese as "Great King." Later Athena games would show direct influences from Daioh's design, with elements like power-up systems and stage designs appearing in subsequent titles. A record score of 144,900 points was achieved on July 15, 2006.
