Cyberball (rev 4)
Atari Games • 1988
Also known as: Cyberball 2072, Tournament Cyberball 2072

Cyberball is a fast-paced four-player sports game released by Atari Games in 1988 that reimagines football for a futuristic setting. Players control teams of metallic athletes competing to advance the ball downfield and score touchdowns. Over one hundred offensive and defensive plays are available, allowing players to strategize and adapt during gameplay. The intense action is punctuated by collisions and visual effects as metal-on-metal impacts occur on the field. Gameplay involves using an 8-way joystick to maneuver your team members and a single button for actions dictated by the selected play. Success depends on coordinating with teammates to execute plays effectively, both offensively and defensively, to outwit opponents and gain control of the ball. The game featured three 68000 processors alongside a MOS Technology 6502 processor, combined with Yamaha YM2151 sound chips, creating an immersive audio-visual experience for players. Cyberball spawned sequels in 1989, including Cyberball 2072 and Tournament Cyberball 2072, following its initial release. The game also saw ports to various home computers and consoles, notably the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and Nintendo NES. Approximately twelve hundred fifty units were manufactured for distribution in the United States.
