Technos Japan’s The Combatribes delivers chaotic three-player fighting action in a unique 2.5D perspective. Players select from a cast of larger-than-life characters and engage in melee combat against rival gang members across varied stages. The gameplay distinguishes itself through interactive elements; players can pick up objects like motorcycles to hurl at opponents, alongside utilizing special moves such as slamming unconscious enemies into others or smashing foes’ heads on the ground for dramatic finishes. This 1990 arcade title allows for simultaneous battles, encouraging unpredictable player interaction and emergent moments of mayhem. Levels feature visual nods to contemporary pop culture, including a character inspired by the Joker from the recent Batman film. Periodically, players will encounter in-game advertisements, such as one for "Block Out," displayed on television screens within the environment. The US version includes an anti-drug message screen promoting a substance-free lifestyle. A soundtrack album was released shortly after the game’s debut, capturing its energetic music and sound effects. The arcade original utilized a Motorola 68000 processor for graphics and a Zilog Z80 alongside Yamaha and OKI chips to produce its distinctive audio.
