Cruis'n USA (v4.5)
Midway • 1994

Cruise across fourteen distinct American locales in Cruis'n USA, a fast-paced arcade racer from Midway released in 1994. Players assume control of a vehicle and navigate point-to-point courses, competing against nine rival racers while dodging civilian traffic and trackside obstacles. Collisions result in lost time, though strategic off-road driving can offer an escape route—at the cost of handling and speed. The game’s arcade style physics emphasize rubbery, exaggerated reactions to impacts, resulting in bouncing and spinning vehicles that quickly recover. Developed with input from Eugene Jarvis, Cruis'n USA was initially touted as a showcase for Ultra 64 hardware but ultimately ran on Midway’s V-unit platform, utilizing digitized textures – a novelty at the time. While designed for single-player action, both upright and sit-down cabinet versions support linked play allowing for two player competition. Discover hidden cars and alternate tracks with specific button combinations to enhance your racing experience. The game's release served as an early preview of technology intended for the then-upcoming Nintendo 64 console, though its hardware ultimately differed significantly from that system. A sequel, Cruis’n World, followed in 1996, establishing a series of driving games focused on exploration and arcade thrills.
