Crack Down (World, Floppy Based, FD1094 317-0058-04c)
Sega • 1989

In Crack Down, two players take on the role of elite agents tasked with infiltrating a futuristic city overrun by a bio-mechanical army. The objective is to plant time bombs within the enemy’s base, disrupting their plans for global domination. Gameplay unfolds across maze-like environments featuring split-screen action allowing for cooperative or competitive play against the clock. Players navigate these levels, utilizing machine guns and cannons that can be replenished by finding ammo caches. When ammunition runs low, hand-to-hand combat becomes necessary to defeat robotic foes. Successfully detonating superbombs triggers a familiar "Hiyaaa" sound—a nod to Sega’s earlier arcade hit, Shinobi—and players will notice the appearance of certain bomb types previously seen in that title as well. The game includes subtle references for those who look closely, such as an acknowledgement of the System 24 hardware within a level's scenery. Skilled players can earn bonus points by strategically eliminating enemies and completing stages using only unarmed attacks.
