Cosmic Guerilla
Universal • 1979

In Cosmic Guerilla, released in 1979 by Universal, players take on the role of defenders protecting two stationary ships positioned at the center of the screen. Rows of barriers provide initial cover as you work your way up from the bottom of the playing field to eliminate surrounding alien forces. Utilizing a simple two-way joystick and single button for firing, this vertical shooter challenges players in cooperative fashion; two can participate simultaneously. The game’s cabinet art is striking, featuring vibrant purple, yellow, and black graphics overlaid on a white base, including an image of a horned demon. A unique and memorable feature of the arcade was its politically charged slogan: "SUPER VIOLENCE!". Scoring rewards players for eliminating enemies and destroying bonus ships appearing throughout gameplay. Cosmic Guerilla is part of Universal’s Cosmic series, which also includes titles like Cosmic Monsters and Cosmic Alien. Later adaptations appeared on home computers such as the Sinclair ZX Spectrum and BBC B under different names.
