Cops'n Robbers
Atari • 1976

Cops'n Robbers pits two players controlling police cars against two playing as robbers in an overhead view of a city street. Each side occupies its own lane, maneuvering up and down to target and shoot vehicles belonging to the opposing team. A randomly moving beer truck adds unpredictable obstacles to the gameplay within a central lane. This Atari title from 1976 was notable for its unique cabinet design – unusually wide to accommodate all four players positioned side-by-side on a single upright machine, a relatively uncommon setup at the time. Players use specialized two-way joysticks that offer multiple positions along a vertical axis, enabling nuanced movement within their respective lanes. The game’s visual presentation features distinct monitor bezels with artwork depicting classic “Gangster” cars and stylized cityscapes, creating an immersive playing environment despite utilizing a black and white display enhanced by color overlays to differentiate the sides of the conflict. The objective is simple: destroy the enemy's vehicles while avoiding obstacles, engaging in a chaotic shootout across the divided cityscape. Cops’n Robbers offered an early example of simultaneous four-player action within a standard arcade format.
