Contra (US / Asia, set 1)
Konami • 1987
Also known as: Gryzor

In 2631, Earth faces an imminent invasion by a terrorist organization known as Red Falcon, and it’s up to two elite soldiers – Bill Rizer and Lance Bean – to stop them. Contra is a fast-paced, side-scrolling platform shooter where players navigate ten increasingly challenging stages, battling hordes of enemies with a rapid-fire machine gun. Gameplay alternates between traditional run-and-gun levels, like the dense jungle environments, and intricately designed "3D maze" sections requiring careful navigation through enemy bases to disable key sensors. Players can collect powerful weapon upgrades throughout their mission, including spread shot guns, lasers, fireballs, and temporary invincibility shields. Mastering movement is crucial; players must jump, shoot in all eight directions, and coordinate attacks while avoiding instant-death hazards. Success relies on quick reflexes and precise timing to overcome the relentless onslaught of enemies and destroy Red Falcon's bases. Beyond its intense action, Contra introduces unique level design with its 3D maze stages. These sections require players to strategically target sensors within corridors, all while dodging electrical currents and navigating tight spaces against a ticking clock. The game provides a thrilling cooperative experience for two players ready to face the alien threat together.
