Data East’s Caveman Ninja, released in 1991, throws players into a frantic, scrolling platformer where two loincloth-clad heroes battle hordes of bizarre enemies. As Joe and Mac, players must hack and slash their way through prehistoric landscapes, using stone tools to defeat dinosaurs, mummies, and other outlandish creatures while collecting power-ups like bombs and axes. The game’s cooperative mode allows for two players to team up against the challenges, adding a chaotic layer of fun to the already intense action. Developed in Japan as Tatakae Genshijin - Joe & Mac, this arcade version is part of a series that would later expand with titles like Congo's Caper and Joe & Mac 2 – Lost in the Tropics. A notable feature of some versions includes an anti-drug message screen. Interestingly, the game’s title appears to playfully reference Data East’s earlier arcade success, Dragonninja. This fast-paced action game has seen numerous ports across various platforms since its initial release, including systems like the Sega Genesis and Nintendo Entertainment System. It even found a place in the collection of music icon Michael Jackson before being sold at auction years later.
