Manhattan (DECO Cassette) (Japan)
Data East Corporation • 1981

Navigate the urban landscape in Manhattan, a unique jump-and-bounce arcade game from Data East released in Japan in 1981. Players control “The DECO Kid,” using a trampoline to propel him across the screen and onto designated landing bars. Precise timing is key, as players must guide The DECO Kid safely while avoiding obstacles like balloons. Successful landings award points, with different areas of the bars seemingly yielding varied scores. A speed indicator at the top of the screen displays the player’s ascent and descent velocity; exceeding a maximum speed results in landing on a building's roof. Falling below a minimum speed causes The DECO Kid to lose a life. Periodically, players can trigger bonus reels by landing on a skyscraper rooftop, attempting to stop them at their highest value for additional points. Special bars marked with the letters “D-E-C-O” grant extra rewards when landed upon. Manhattan offers cooperative gameplay for two players and utilizes Data East’s DECO Cassette System hardware. Extra lives are awarded at point milestones of 3000, 5000, and 7000 points, encouraging skillful trampoline launches to maximize height and score within the bustling cityscape.
