Cliff Hanger (set 1)
Stern Electronics • 1983

In Cliff Hanger, two players take on the roles of Cliff and his companion as they navigate perilous platforms to rescue Clarissa from the clutches of the villainous Count Draco. This 1983 platform game challenges players to run, jump, and climb across a series of animated landscapes while avoiding obstacles and enemies. The visuals are drawn from the popular Japanese manga Lupin III, specifically utilizing animation sequences from Castle of Cagliostro and Mystery of Mamo. The gameplay revolves around precise timing and coordination between the two players as they progress through increasingly difficult stages. Players must overcome varied challenges, including precarious drops and encounters with Draco’s forces, all while racing against time to prevent Clarissa's forced marriage. Character names were altered for this adaptation; Lupin becomes Cliff, Daisuke Jigen is now Jeff, and Goemon Ishikawa is known as Samurai. Stern Electronics created Cliff Hanger using a Zilog Z80 main CPU and custom sound circuitry, marking the company’s introduction to laser disk technology in arcade games. The game features two buttons for player control and maintains a record of high scores, with Chip Sbronga holding the top score achieved over 20 years ago.
