Highway Chase (DECO Cassette) (US)
Data East Corporation • 1980

Highway Chase is a two-player vertical shooter released by Data East in 1980 and running on their DECO Cassette System hardware. Players control vehicles tasked with eliminating flashing cars that appear across the screen; clearing all enemies advances the game to the next level. The game, published as part of the system’s initial lineup alongside titles like Sengoku Ninja-tai and Manhattan, marked a technological first for Data East. The title "Highway Chase" was chosen with an eye toward re-using existing development resources from earlier projects such as Mad Rider. The game's title screen proclaims it to be “Fantastic! Exciting! Thrilling!” Players will find themselves in a straightforward, action-oriented experience reminiscent of games like Galaxian. This early DECO Cassette release utilized cartridge and dongle technology (Cartridge ID: Cassette DT-1010 and dongle DP-1010) and initially appeared in Japanese arcades in December 1980.
