Gameplay

Konami’s Chequered Flag, released in 1988, puts players behind the wheel of a race car navigating twisting, overhead courses against the clock. The game utilizes sprite scaling to create a visually distinct racing experience as you strive to reach each finish line before time runs out. A damage meter tracks your vehicle's condition, indicating when crucial components like tires, brakes, and the engine require attention. When damage becomes excessive, a pit stop is necessary for repairs. The game features stages inspired by real-world race circuits, including recreations of Suzuka’s east course and Circuit de la Sarthe (home to the 24 Hours of Le Mans). Players control their car using an analog gas pedal, digital brake, steering wheel, and gear shifter to manage speed and handling across these challenging tracks. A unique feature of Chequered Flag is its warning system; Stage #2 will prompt players to change to rain tires if they ignore the advice, leading to handling issues. A soundtrack album was also released shortly after the game's debut, showcasing Konami’s arcade music from the era.
