Gameplay

Navigate highways and waterways in Change Lanes, a fast-paced driving game released by Taito America Corporation in 1983. As the driver of an amphibious vehicle, your objective is to reach each checkpoint before your fuel supply runs out. The game alternates between road segments – some grey, others brown for higher speeds – and river sections requiring quick transitions to avoid obstacles along both surfaces. The gameplay centers around skillful maneuvering and reaction time. Collisions with civilian cars, police vehicles, oil slicks, pylons, or mines will deplete your fuel reserves. Successfully reaching a checkpoint awards bonus fuel, but careful driving is essential to conserve what you have. Should your car be destroyed, it can be replaced if enough accumulated bonus fuel points are available. Change Lanes challenges players with its unique combination of racing and resource management, offering a single-player experience controlled by joystick or steering wheel, complete with accelerator pedal and gear shifting for forward and reverse movement.
