Centipede (revision 4)
Atari • 1980

Centipede (revision 4) challenges players to defend a vibrant mushroom patch from an ever-descending centipede. Using a trackball for precise control, you maneuver a targeting reticule and fire at segments of the centipede as it snakes its way down the screen. Each segment destroyed causes it to split into two smaller centipedes, creating increasingly complex patterns to manage. Mushrooms scattered throughout the playfield can also be shot for points or strategically cleared to alter the centipede's path. As you progress, the gameplay intensifies with the introduction of new elements. Spiders patrol the screen, destroying mushrooms and posing a threat if they collide with your targeting reticule. Fleas begin to appear, leaving trails of new mushrooms as they descend, while scorpions occasionally emerge, poisoning the surrounding mushrooms and altering their behavior. Reaching high scores brings faster fleas and restricted spider movement, adding further challenge to this unique shooter experience. Centipede’s distinctive combination of strategic shooting and dynamic screen layout created a refreshing arcade experience when it debuted in 1980, offering players a captivating blend of skill and whimsical design.
