Gameplay

Crystal Castles presents a unique twist on classic maze gameplay, tasking players as Bentley Bear within a series of interconnected, isometric castles. Navigate each castle by collecting scattered gemstones while evading various enemies like sentient trees, gem-eating creatures, and the witch Berthilda. Players can jump to avoid obstacles and reach higher platforms, uncovering hidden passages and warp zones that propel them through the game’s 37 distinct maze levels spread across ten stages. The gameplay isn't solely about evasion; strategic interactions with enemies are key to scoring points. Touching a Gem Eater while it’s consuming a gem results in its defeat and bonus points, but contact when it is not eating will cost you health. Collecting all the gems within a castle rewards additional bonuses, and players can temporarily gain invincibility by acquiring Berthilda's hat. Available in both upright and cocktail cabinet configurations, Crystal Castles offered a visually striking arcade experience with intricate graphics and an unusual control scheme utilizing a trackball for movement and a single jump button. The game’s soundtrack incorporates classical music pieces like those from Liszt and Tchaikovsky, lending an unexpected sophistication to the collection-based action.
