Astro Fantasia (DECO Cassette) (US)
Data East Corporation • 1981

Astro Fantasia is a two-player vertical shooter released by Data East in 1981, utilizing their unique DECO Cassette System hardware. Players pilot a fighter ship through alternating play screens, initially maneuvering within a limited area against waves of descending UFOs and a distant mothership that's initially invulnerable to attack. A distinctive visual feature is the scaling effect as enemy ships approach, creating a sense of depth unusual for games of the era. Clearing the initial armada triggers a second phase where the mothership begins launching both attacking fighters and new green enemies which split into multiple foes upon contact with the player’s territory. The game transitions to a direct confrontation with the mothership, restricting players to single shots. Destroying the mothership requires targeting three distinct areas; sparks on either side followed by the central core. Successfully damaging these components advances the gameplay, rewarding bonus points based on remaining fuel before initiating a cycle again with increased difficulty. Astro Fantasia was released in Japan as the seventh title for the DECO Cassette System and was unique for its use of audio cassette technology to store game data, holding 32K across a two-minute tape.
