Carnival (upright, AY8912 music)
Sega • 1980

Step right up to Carnival, a single-player shooting gallery game from Sega released in 1980. Players use a rifle sight and trigger controls to target rows of moving objects across the screen, simulating a classic carnival experience. Targets are arranged on three horizontal bands that scroll continuously – top row moving down, middle row up, and bottom row down – with points awarded based on the target's position; hitting targets on the upper row is worth more than those lower down. Beyond simply shooting rows of rabbits, owls, and numbered signs (which award extra ammunition), players must also keep an eye out for ducks that can break free from their lanes to steal bullets. A bonus system rewards skillful play by requiring players to hit a series of moving letters in the correct order; successful completion triggers a "shoot the bear" sequence between rounds where hitting the increasingly frantic bear earns points. The game incorporates dynamic music and gradually increasing speed, heightening the challenge as you progress through levels while competing with another virtual player who experiences the same escalating difficulty.
