Canyon Bomber
Atari • 1977

In Canyon Bomber, two players pilot either a blimp or an airplane, strategically dropping bombs to destroy rock formations within a canyon landscape. The gameplay revolves around precision and anticipation; successful bombing earns points, while missed drops lead to game over. Players must account for their aircraft's speed and altitude when releasing bombs, as these factors directly influence the point of impact. The challenge lies in targeting increasingly difficult-to-reach rocks, with higher scores awarded for more strategically placed targets. Clearing half the canyon triggers a shift from the slower blimp to the faster airplane, altering the gameplay dynamic. A unique aspect is that bombing certain rock formations can cause upper layers to settle onto lower ones, adding another layer of tactical consideration. Players compete against each other or a computer opponent, aiming for the highest score by skillfully navigating the canyon and exploiting opportunities to eliminate rocks – with the chance to see the canyon refill itself multiple times if successful.
