Battlezone (rev 2)
Atari • 1980

Step into the cockpit of a tank and navigate a stark, wireframe landscape in Atari’s Battlezone. As a lone player, your mission is to destroy enemy tanks patrolling a valley surrounded by mountains, all while avoiding incoming fire and homing missiles. A radar display provides vital information about approaching threats within range, allowing you to utilize the terrain for cover as you maneuver and target opponents with single, precise shots. The game presents a unique challenge with two types of enemies: standard tanks that move slowly and faster "Super Tanks" requiring quick reflexes. Periodically, a flying saucer will appear, offering bonus points if destroyed but posing no direct threat. The distinctive visual style, using a black and white monitor with green and red overlays for the radar and warnings, adds to the immersive experience of this early first-person shooter. Battlezone's innovative use of a "mathbox" processor allowed Atari engineers to create a convincing 3D environment on limited hardware, marking an early milestone in video game design. The controls consist of dual joysticks for tank movement and a single button for firing, demanding accuracy and skillful maneuvering to survive the relentless onslaught.
