Gameplay

Take to the skies in B-Wings, a cooperative vertical scrolling shooter from Data East released in Japan in 1984. Players control two aircraft battling through forty-five increasingly challenging levels of enemy forces. Using an eight-way joystick and two buttons, players maneuver their fighters and unleash attacks against waves of opposition while progressing upwards through the screen. The game’s name, B-Wings, is short for “Battle Wings.” Programmed by Akira Sakuma, this shooter utilizes a DECO sound chip alongside General Instrument AY8910 chips to provide its audio experience. Two players can team up and coordinate their efforts in an attempt to survive the onslaught of enemies presented across the numerous stages. B-Wings originally ran on two M6809 main CPUs and offered a distinctive gameplay experience, later ported to the Nintendo Famicom in Japan as "B-Wings [Model DFC-BW]."
