Gameplay

Defend your web in Atari’s Black Widow, a fast-paced shooter released in 1982. You control a spider tasked with eliminating waves of invading insects – mosquitos, beetles, hornets, and more – each presenting unique challenges. The game utilizes a distinctive vector graphics style and twin-stick controls; one stick directs the spider’s movement while the other manages its firing direction, requiring precise aiming to clear each increasingly complex web. Gameplay involves not only destroying enemies but also managing their interactions with the environment. Some insects leave behind valuable "grub steaks" that provide points when collected, while others lay eggs which must be carefully maneuvered to avoid hatching into dangerous creatures. Grenade bugs offer a powerful offensive option, capable of clearing large portions of the web with an explosive blast, though care must be taken as the player is also vulnerable to its effects. Black Widow features fourteen selectable difficulty levels, each offering progressively greater point bonuses for completion. The game’s unique mechanics and challenging gameplay made it a memorable addition to the golden age of arcades, and it has since been ported to numerous platforms.
