Bubbles
Williams • 1982

Control a cartoon bubble within a giant sink and embark on a unique cleaning quest in Williams’ 1982 arcade game, Bubbles. As you navigate this unusual playfield, your objective is to clear away grime like crumbs, ants, and grease by absorbing them. However, be wary of sponges, roaches, brushes, and especially razor blades – contact with these hazards will damage your bubble. A clever mechanic allows the bubble to grow in size as it collects dirt, eventually enabling it to withstand brushes and even sponges, although razors remain a constant threat. The gameplay centers around maneuvering the bubble across the sink’s surface, strategically avoiding dangers while gathering debris. Collecting items increases the bubble's size, allowing for new offensive capabilities. Mastering the game involves understanding how the bubble drifts with your joystick movements—an attempt to simulate fluid motion on a digital control system—and using this to outmaneuver enemies and collect rewards. Bubbles was released in multiple cabinet styles – standard wooden upright, a durable plastic DuraMold design, and smaller cabaret versions - each offering a distinct visual experience. The game’s charming characters and unusual setting set it apart from other arcade titles of the early 1980s.
