Breakout
Atari • 1976

Breakout challenges two players to demolish rows of bricks using a paddle and ball. The game begins with eight rows of colored bricks – yellow, green, orange, and red - each awarding increasing points as you progress upwards. Players maneuver their paddles horizontally across the bottom of the screen, deflecting the ball to knock down the bricks. Initially, three balls are in play, multiplying the chances for success, but also adding complexity as players attempt to keep them all active. As more rows are cleared, the paddle shrinks in size and the ball’s speed increases, testing reflexes and precision. The game's design has a fascinating history; early development involved a competition between Atari employees that led to Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs collaborating on an initial, highly-optimized design. While brilliant, this original architecture proved too complex for production, necessitating a redesign for mass manufacturing. Breakout was released in 1976 and quickly became popular, spawning several sequels and numerous ports across various platforms. Both upright and round cocktail cabinet versions of the arcade game were produced; the latter are more commonly found today. The highest recorded score on this classic is an impressive 896 points achieved by Zachary Hample.
