Borderline
Sega • 1981
Also known as: Star Raker

Borderline challenges players to destroy enemy infrastructure in this cooperative vertical shooter from Sega, released in 1981. As drivers maneuvering a jeep, one or two players navigate through four distinct sectors, each presenting unique hazards and enemy formations. Players must dodge interceptors, tanks, missiles, and drones while progressing toward their objectives – primarily energy plants and refineries. Gameplay involves carefully charting routes through dense underbrush where drone patrols mimic the player's movements, adding a layer of strategic maze-solving to the action. Sectors also feature descending tanks and walls that drones will breach once before stopping, demanding precise maneuvering and timing. Players alternate control of jeeps as they progress through each sector, working together to overcome increasingly difficult challenges. The game utilizes a Zilog Z80 main CPU and an I8039 sound CPU with a General Instrument AY8910 chip for audio, creating a tense atmosphere punctuated by the sounds of combat. Borderline was initially released in Japan and later licensed to Karateco, alongside a bootleg version produced by Sidam.
