Blasteroids (rev 4)
Atari Games • 1987

Blasteroids (rev 4) builds upon the classic Asteroids formula with a more expansive galactic journey and added strategic elements. Players pilot a spacecraft through interconnected star systems, each containing asteroid fields teeming with obstacles and enemy ships. Unlike its predecessor, fuel management is now crucial; asteroids of specific colors must be destroyed to replenish your supply, adding another layer of challenge as running out leaves you stranded. Three distinct ship configurations – Speeder, Fighter, and Warrior – offer different trade-offs in speed, strength, and maneuverability, allowing for varied playstyles and tactical approaches. The game's structure involves clearing each sector within a star system to unlock the next, eventually leading to a final confrontation with Mukor, a colossal asteroid boss. Power-ups scattered throughout the levels provide temporary advantages like enhanced weaponry or shields, while unique "popcorn" asteroids pose an ever-increasing threat as they grow larger and faster upon impact. A distinctive two-player mode allows for cooperative gameplay, where players can dock their ships to combine strengths and control a single, more powerful vessel with dual firing capabilities. Digitized imagery from Industrial Light & Magic adds visual detail to the asteroid fields and spacecraft, creating an immersive experience as you navigate this expanding universe.
