Block Out (set 1)
Technos Japan / California Dreams • 1989

Technos Japan and California Dreams’ Block Out challenges players to strategically fill a three-dimensional well with falling blocks. Using a joystick and buttons to rotate each block before dropping it into place, the goal is to completely eliminate layers of the structure without leaving gaps. Successfully clearing a layer removes it, creating space for further play and increasing the difficulty as more stages are completed. The game features one hundred progressively challenging levels, selectable at the start. A competitive two-player mode pits players against each other in a split-screen format where actions directly impact their opponent’s pit; removing layers from your own well adds to your adversary's, effectively raising its level and restricting available space. Victory can be achieved either by forcing an opponent's well to overflow or by clearing twenty-one layers before them. Achieving a "block out" – completely eliminating all blocks in the well – awards bonus points and temporarily eases the stage’s difficulty.
