Block Fever
Nintendo • 1978

Block Fever is a two-player ball and paddle arcade game released by Nintendo in 1978. Players control paddles to deflect a ball and break arrangements of blocks, echoing the gameplay style of Breakout. The game offers three distinct modes that alter the block behavior; one mode features descending blocks that progressively narrow the playing field, another causes the entire block structure to shift horizontally, and the third challenges players to aim for specific points on stationary blocks to trigger bonus scoring opportunities. As players successfully eliminate blocks, the ball's speed and paddle size dynamically change, increasing the challenge. Successfully clearing all the blocks results in their reappearance on screen, allowing players to continue accumulating points towards a four-digit high score. Gameplay concludes when a player fails to deflect the ball. Originally released in Japan during November of 1978, Block Fever was later adapted for the Nintendo Color TV Block Kusure home console in 1979.
