Gameplay

Blazing Lazers is a vertically scrolling shooter released in 1989 by United Amusements for their PC Engine arcade hardware. As a single player, you pilot a spacecraft maneuvering through increasingly challenging levels filled with enemy formations and obstacles. The game utilizes the capabilities of the PC Engine to deliver fast-paced action as you attempt to destroy waves of adversaries and progress deeper into the game’s stages. This unique title is notable for its unusual development history; United Amusements, a significant arcade operator in the United States, created custom hardware based on NEC's PC Engine platform. The project received support from NEC initially, but funding was later withdrawn before widespread distribution could occur. As a result, Blazing Lazers remains a relatively obscure piece of arcade gaming history. The game’s design demonstrates an effort to bring the power of the PC Engine to arcades via a JAMMA interface, showcasing what might have been if the project had continued beyond its initial development phase.
