Midway Games • 1997

Step into the neon-drenched future of Bio F.R.E.A.K.S., a two-player versus fighting game from Midway released in 1997. Players select from a roster of bioengineered warriors—the acronym "Bio F.R.E.A.K.S." stands for Biological Flying Robotic Enhanced Armored Killing Synthoids—and engage in close-quarters combat using an eight-way joystick and six buttons to execute attacks and maneuvers. The game runs on Midway Seattle hardware, featuring a distinct visual style befitting its futuristic setting. As players battle each other, they’ll utilize a variety of special moves designed for their chosen character. Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. represents an early prototype (version 0.1i) with a boot ROM; while it never achieved widespread commercial release in arcades beyond this stage of development, it was later ported to home consoles including the Sony PlayStation and Nintendo 64, as well as PC for MS Windows. The game’s sound is powered by two DMA-driven chips running at 16 MHz, complementing the main CPU which operates at a speed of 150 MHz.
