Bio Attack
Taito Corporation • 1983

Navigate the human body in Taito’s 1983 vertical scrolling shooter, Bio Attack. As a miniature submarine, players must blast away viruses and other microscopic threats within a unique biological landscape. Two players can team up to tackle increasingly challenging levels that take them through blood vessels, organs, and even into the eye. The gameplay revolves around managing oxygen while eliminating enemies. Rapid forward movement increases the scrolling speed but depletes your oxygen supply; collecting oxygen capsules is vital for survival. Levels progress from battling bacterial threats within the heart to confronting viruses in the stomach, culminating in a disorienting maze sequence inside an eyeball before the cycle repeats. Controlling the submarine requires precision as only two shots can be fired at once. Players utilize an eight-way joystick and a single button to shoot their way through this bizarre and visually striking adventure, originally inspired by the film Fantastic Voyage.
