Big Karnak (ver. 1.0, checksum 1e38c94)
Gaelco • 1991

Step into the sands of ancient Egypt in Big Karnak, a fast-paced platform fighter released by Gaelco in 1991. Players control a pharaoh battling through perilous environments teeming with cobras, scorpions, and other deadly foes. Using an eight-way joystick and two buttons for jumping and shooting, you’ll navigate scrolling stages while contending with increasingly challenging enemies. The gameplay combines elements of platforming action with fighting game mechanics as you progress through the levels. Power-ups such as extra energy, time extensions, swords to add extra arms, and scepters are scattered throughout each stage. A familiar sound effect for taking damage and another for defeating opponents hint at influences from earlier arcade titles like Double Dragon. Big Karnak supports two players simultaneously, allowing for cooperative combat against the game’s hazards and bosses, including one inspired by a character from Bad Dudes vs. Dragonninja. Collecting items grants beneficial bonuses and extra lives are rewarded with a point total of 100,000.
