BeatHead is a two-player platform game released by Atari Games in 1993. Players navigate a series of tiles, attempting to claim territory by jumping on those matching their color, or that display both player colors simultaneously. The core gameplay involves strategically filling your designated spaces before your opponent does. Built around an unusual technical foundation—with its timing derived from the audio circuitry—BeatHead represents a unique experiment in Atari’s approach to game development during this period. The game's design stemmed from Atari’s interest in supporting unconventional concepts, although it ultimately remained unfinished and saw limited distribution. Due to internal constraints and a short field test phase, BeatHead features a notably repetitive mechanic with few variations beyond initial encounters. Its abrupt conclusion is reflected in the small number of distinct levels available. A POST screen greeting displays "Stella on Steroids," an inside reference connecting this bitmap-based game back to Atari’s earlier home console project, codenamed ‘Stella’. BeatHead utilizes a custom CPU and sound chips for its unique presentation, though these elements also contributed to the game's technical fragility.
