Gameplay

The Battle-Road is a two-player vertical shooter released in Japan by Irem in 1984. Players control vehicles navigating a series of increasingly challenging stages, ranging from rural farmland to industrial wastelands. Movement is strictly upward as you dodge obstacles and attack stationary turrets along the route; fuel management is critical for survival, as running dry ends the game. Two players can participate, alternating turns in this tense driving experience. Gameplay centers around avoiding hazards like falling rocks, mines, and pursuing enemies while utilizing both forward-firing and side-shooting capabilities to clear a path. Occasionally, a helicopter will provide support by launching rockets—a direct hit results in immediate failure. Unique stage encounters include evading pedestrians throwing grenades and confronting an unavoidable "suicide terrorist" who leaps onto your vehicle. While inspired by games like Spy Hunter, The Battle-Road distinguishes itself through its distinct visual style and demanding gameplay, with a focus on precision driving and resource conservation. Players can enter up to eight letters for their initials when attempting to achieve the highest score.
