Gameplay

Battle Cross is a cooperative flying shooter released in Japan in November 1982 by Omori Electric. Two players pilot ships maneuvering freely in all directions across the screen as enemy fleets emerge from either side and travel in looping formations. The objective is to destroy these approaching waves of spacecraft, earning points for each successful engagement. Different ship types are encountered, with higher-ranking enemies awarding more points than standard foes. Gameplay relies on precise control using an eight-way joystick and a single button for firing. Players must coordinate their movements and attacks to overcome the increasingly complex patterns of incoming enemy ships. The game’s visuals are driven by a Zilog Z80 processor, complemented by sound effects produced through a General Instrument AY8910 chip. Scoring is based on the type of enemy ship destroyed, with values ranging from 100 points for a basic "Ione" to 1000 points for eliminating a “Laser Ship.” A version of Battle Cross was later ported to MSX computers.
