Barrier
Cinematronics (Vectorbeam license) • 1979

Navigate a shifting grid in Barrier, a unique puzzle game released in 1979 by Cinematronics under license from Vectorbeam. Two players compete to maneuver their markers across a three-by-nine playing field displayed at an angled perspective that creates the impression of depth. The goal is simple: reach the end of the grid, which then teleports your marker back to the beginning, while simultaneously avoiding the movement of opposing markers represented as diamonds. The gameplay relies on strategic positioning and anticipation as players use directional buttons to guide their triangles through the maze-like layout. Barrier utilizes a distinctive visual presentation; the game’s compact play area is framed by an unusually large monitor with a custom bezel, resulting in a vertically oriented display that fills most of the arcade cabinet. Originally conceived when Vectorbeam needed a product to distribute after Speed Freak, Barrier's design echoes earlier handheld games while offering a minimalist and challenging experience for two players.
