Bal Cube (Japan)
Metro • 1996

Metro’s Bal Cube, released in Japan in 1996, offers a fresh spin on the classic ball and paddle gameplay popularized by games like Arkanoid. Instead of maneuvering a paddle to deflect a bouncing ball, players directly control the ball's trajectory using an eight-way joystick, guiding it to break formations of blocks descending from above. These block arrangements include squares, triangles, and special blocks that trigger powerups, adding variety to each level’s challenge. The objective is simple: clear all the blocks before they reach the bottom of the screen or the ball falls past the lower boundary, resulting in a game over and restarting at the beginning. Two players can compete simultaneously, each attempting to outscore their opponent by clearing blocks more efficiently. As play progresses, Bal Cube introduces puzzle-like elements, requiring careful planning and precision to navigate increasingly complex block layouts. Powered by a Motorola 68000 processor and featuring sound from a YMF278B chip, this two-player arcade game provides a unique twist on a familiar formula— demanding both skill and strategic thinking for success.
