Bad Lands
Atari Games • 1989

Step into a desolate future in Bad Lands, Atari Games’ final installment in their popular Sprint racing series. Fifty years after a nuclear disaster reshaped the world, sprint racing has become a brutal competition between armed vehicles battling across tracks built within the dangerous BADLANDS zone. Two players can compete simultaneously, maneuvering their cars around single-screen courses and firing cannons to impede rivals while attempting to complete three laps for victory. Players collect wrenches throughout each race to upgrade their vehicles with missiles, improved tires, turbo boosts, increased speed, or protective shields. Shooting targets scattered across the tracks awards bonus points and extra missiles. Familiar sounds from earlier Sprint games return, especially when wrench upgrades are collected. Eight unique circuits offer varied post-apocalyptic environments, but due to a change in display technology compared to previous installments, Bad Lands features slightly larger cars and a more compact feel as only three vehicles compete on each track.
