Take to the skies in Back Fire, a two-player horizontal shooter from Tecmo released in 1988. As pilots battling through eighteen increasingly challenging stages, players maneuver their aircraft and unleash a primary weapon that can be upgraded for improved speed and power. Throughout the game, special power-ups appear, granting temporary abilities like lightning strikes or multi-directional firing patterns to aid in your fight against airborne enemies. The gameplay centers on navigating scrolling environments while dodging projectiles and destroying enemy formations. Successfully clearing each level advances players toward the game’s conclusion; however, continuing from levels fourteen through eighteen restarts progress at level thirteen. Though initially presented at an industry showcase, Back Fire ultimately led to the development of Tecmo's subsequent title, Silkworm, with some background graphics finding a second life in that later release. Considered a prototype or limited release, Back Fire offers a straightforward and engaging shooter experience for two players looking for classic arcade action.
