Asteroids Deluxe (rev 3)
Atari • 1980

Navigate the cosmos in Atari’s Asteroids Deluxe, a challenging evolution of the classic arcade shooter. As the pilot of a lone spaceship, your mission is to destroy asteroids, flying saucers, and enemy ships that drift across the screen. Using rotation, thrust, and firing controls, you maneuver through space, breaking down large asteroids into progressively smaller fragments for escalating point rewards. A temporary shield provides brief protection from incoming threats, but its power diminishes with repeated use, demanding skillful piloting to survive. The game introduces new elements like hexagon-shaped enemy ships that release tracking diamonds and triangles when destroyed, adding layers of complexity to the original gameplay experience. Flying saucers pose an additional threat, firing projectiles at both the player's ship and any nearby hexagons. Strategic use of thrust is essential for dodging incoming fire and navigating the increasingly chaotic asteroid field. Asteroids Deluxe was released in three distinct cabinet styles – upright, cabaret, and cocktail – each offering unique aesthetic variations while maintaining compatibility with the original Asteroids game board. The game's challenge arose from a deliberate attempt to increase difficulty, pushing skilled players to their limits.
