Armored Car (set 1)
Stern Electronics • 1981

Navigate twisting roadways in Armored Car, a cooperative maze game for two players released by Stern Electronics in 1981. As armored car drivers, you must collect money and deliver it to banks while dodging pursuing criminals. The screen scrolls continuously from right to left, presenting new challenges as you progress. Strategic use of saw horses can block pursuers, though maintaining fuel levels at gas stations is essential for survival. The game presents an overhead view, with intersections sometimes marked by directional signs to aid navigation. Players earn points by moving, collecting money, and eliminating robbers. Depositing collected funds into banks awards bonus points based on the total amount delivered – a clever incentive to risk more! Armored Car was Stern’s first game, designed by Chris Oberth and Gunar Licitis, and draws inspiration from earlier maze titles. Featuring a Zilog Z80 processor and General Instrument sound chips, this two-player experience offers a unique blend of strategic navigation and cooperative gameplay that debuted in 1981.
