Arkanoid Returns (Ver 2.02O 1997/02/10)
Taito Corporation • 1997

Arkanoid Returns is Taito’s third installment in their classic brick-breaking series, arriving in arcades in 1997. Up to four players can simultaneously control paddles to rebound a ball and clear patterns of bricks from the play area. Each level introduces new enemy encounters and power-ups that are released when certain bricks are struck; collecting these power-ups grants various advantages during gameplay. While retaining the core mechanics familiar to fans of the original Arkanoid games, this version features updated graphics and sound alongside some minor enhancements to existing power-ups. The game consists of 100 levels—completing the first 50 unlocks a standard staff roll, while finishing all 100 culminates in a unique ending sequence featuring a CGI animation. A secret set of more challenging levels can be accessed by entering a specific button combination after inserting a coin. Players gain extra lives by collecting silver "P" capsules, and it's possible to join an ongoing game at any time. The territorial restrictions on different ROM versions (J, A, and O) reflect varied distribution rights across the globe.
